VBAZ: Deploy Veeam Backup for Azure appliance from VBR
To deploy a Veeam Backup for Azure appliance from the Veeam Backup and Replication console, do the following.
Important: your VBR needs to be on or above the version 12.1.2.172. Earlier versions did not include this possibility.
Appliance deployment wizard
Open VBR console.
Go to Backup Infrastructure > right click Managed servers > Add server..
Choose Veeam cloud-native backup appliance from the list.
Choose Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure.
Choose Deploy a new appliance.
In the Account section, click Add... to add a new compute account.
This is a compute account created inside your Azure tenant that will be used to deploy the appliance. You need to log in with a global admin to create this special account. A new wizard will open to guide you through.
Compute account creation wizard
Give the new account a name.
Choose Microsoft Azure and your region (normally, this is Global).
Choose Create a new account.
Now you'll need to sign in to Azure with your global admin.
To do this, first copy the Passcode, then open the device login link. This will open the device login page in your default browser (use Chrome or Edge - never use Internet Explorer).
Paste the code.
Give your Azure Global admin username and password.
Click Continue to allow Veeam access to Azure CLI.
You can close the page now.
The wizard will create the account. If it's successful, the Next button will become active.
Note: if you get an error at this step, cancel the account creation wizard and start it over by trying to Add the compute account again.
Review the summary and click Finish to exit the account creation wizard.
Back in the Appliance deployment wizard
The newly created compute account is selected.
In the Subscription section, choose your subscription (this is read up from your Azure tenant).
Choose your data center location.
Important: choose the location where you have your resources. If you choose a location, where you don't have any resources, the appliance creation may fail.
Choose (create new) to create a new resource group for your new appliance.
The newly created appliance is an Ubuntu 22 virtual machine. Give a name to this new VM.
In the Advanced menu, you can configure the size of the new VM.
In the Networking section, leave everything on (create new).
Under Backup server public IP address, give the public IP address from where you will access the appliance. This is important, because if you try to access the appliance from an IP which is not on this list, you won't be able to visit the web console of the appliance.
Choose Static IP.
Note: Dynamic public IPs will be retired by Microsoft from September 2025. So it's strongly recommended to use a Static IP.
Under the Guest OS section, specify the administrator credentials for the appliance and the key pair which will be used to encrypt it.
After clicking Apply, the deployment will start.
Successful deployment:
Click Finish to exit the wizard.
